Survey Reveals Businesses are ‘All in’ on Wireless WAN

New report finds 78% of companies use or plan to use LTE to provide WAN or internet connectivity; 82% believe 5G will deliver increased WAN speeds within the next year

Cradlepoint, the global leader in cloud-delivered LTE and 5G wireless network edge solutions, today released findings from its annual State of Wireless WAN Report, compiled by IDG. The results confirm that the era of Wireless WAN has firmly arrived and is the critical infrastructure in driving innovation, including playing a role in business recovery from the pandemic. The survey findings demonstrate confidence and excitement for 5G, pointing to increasing adoption in the coming year.

Traditional wired WANs are complex, slow to adapt, and applicable to only fixed locations. As businesses reinvent the way they serve their customers, they are increasingly turning to Wireless WAN technology to connect people, places, and things anywhere. Key findings from the report include:

Wireless WAN’s Rise to Dominance

The agility required by pandemic-hastened business transformation and the growing number of connected devices are the top reasons businesses are turning to Wireless WAN solutions.

Bandwidth is another significant factor in the increased use of Wireless WAN links. Fifty-seven percent of respondents said bandwidth is a reason for adopting broadband, and 49% said it was a reason for choosing LTE. Today’s cellular networks are approaching fiber-fast speeds and provide rapid deployment capabilities that are unparalleled.

LTE Enables Business Agility

As businesses scramble to create new services and find new ways to engage and serve their customers, WAN flexibility is essential. Fifty-one percent cited the flexibility of LTE to enable new services as a top reason for turning to Wireless WAN solutions.

Seventy-eight percent of companies surveyed either use or plan to use LTE to provide WAN or internet connectivity to at least some locations, but the use of LTE is also expanding beyond just the branch. Fifty-three percent of companies are using it to connect in-vehicle networks, and 77% are connecting IoT devices. Additionally, 40% of respondents are using LTE to connect fixed locations, vehicles, and IoT, making LTE the top choice for connecting people, places, and things across the rapidly expanding WAN edge. This metric helps explain why 62% of enterprises plan to increase their use of LTE in the next three years.

5G: Ready to Takeoff

IT decision-makers believe in the promise of 5G, with 67% either confident or very confident 5G will deliver business benefits within the next year. Eighty-two percent believe 5G will deliver increased WAN speeds within the next year, and 66% think it will provide improved reliability.

Hi-speed Secure Network connects RAF jets

Eurofighter Typhoons linked to assets across UK in live battlespace scenario.

Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets have used a Dedicated Engineering Network (DEN) deployed at 10 BAE Systems sites in a training exercise that simulated a live war scenario.

The DEN, which is a high performance secure WAN (wide area network) was utilised at systems across the UK and at RAD Leuchars, and simulated a computer-like ‘war-game’ to help train pilots, operators, and other forces personnel.

Controlled from BAE Systems New Malden, the DEN supported multiple concurrent activities at different security levels up to and including SECRET. It has similarities with a private cloud computing network which provides gateways to third party networks including JMNIAN and enables cross-site development, system integration, testing and trials activities in support of strategic campaigns and programme delivery.

DEN is a secure network that can be extended on a per-node basis to allow inter-site trials and training activities.

DEN linked a number of simulators creating a live war scenario in which Typhoon pilots at RAF Leuchars operated with air and maritime assets located at four sites across UK in the first training mission simulation of its kind.

“Royal Navy and RAF operators performed a complex real-time mission scenario which saw four Typhoons conduct a swing role mission scenario, integrated with the PLEXYS AWACS E-3D Sentry emulation based at BAE Systems New Malden and a Type 45 Destroyer simulation based at BAE Systems Broad Oak,” BAE Systems said.

The aim of the training was to demonstrate the company’s ability to provide low cost effective training for complex, mission scenarios using key air, land and maritime military assets.

“Striking the right balance between live and synthetic training is of high priority to the Typhoon Force,” said Air Commodore Gary Waterfall, Typhoon Force Commander. “What we have seen today is a seamless integration of air and sea assets in a synthetic environment. Proof that the technology exists today to train for tomorrow.”

Lieutenant Simon Holbrook, Type 45 Fighter Controller in the trial said: “It was hugely beneficial from my point of view. The interaction between the Type 45, E3-D and the four Typhoon simulators provided all the participants with a valuable opportunity to operate together efficiently and in a realistic scenario with all the benefits of simulated training. As an Instructor at the Royal Navy School of Fighter Control, I was impressed at how the exercise flowed given the different simulators contributing. We have already fed through some lessons learnt from interaction with the E3D Sentry and Typhoon.”
