Sierra Wireless and Movimento Accelerate Adoption of Over-the-Air Vehicle Software Management

Car manufacturers can now offer car owners seamless cloud-based embedded software maintenance and the latest capability upgrades over vehicle’s entire lifecycle

Sierra Wireless and Movimento today announced a partnership to provide automotive OEMs with an integrated solution to streamline vehicle software installation and updates. Sierra Wireless’s device-to-cloud solution and Movimento’s Over the Air (OTA) technology together provide the industry’s first commercially available cloud-based platform to maintain connected cars.

“Cars are becoming part of our connected life, and we expect that they are not only up to date, secure and reliable, but we also want access to the latest features,” said Philippe Guillemette, Chief Technology Officer, Sierra Wireless. “The solution that we’ve created with Movimento will enable automotive manufacturers to deliver these complex software requirements seamlessly across a vehicle’s entire lifecycle.”

All vehicles have numerous software programs running on a network of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) that need to be individually managed and maintained. The Sierra Wireless-Movimento solution allows automotive OEMs to update software for all ECUs simultaneously over-the-air. When an automaker needs to upgrade a vehicle’s systems, it’s now as simple as logging into the dashboard over a secure network and selecting the appropriate update campaign.

According to data collected by J.D. Power through its SafetyIQ program, 189 separate software recalls have been issued in the past five years, impacting more than 13 million vehicles. With the Sierra Wireless-Movimento solution, these recalls could be easily and efficiently resolved over-the-air, and without missing any vehicles.

“Our combined solution removes all of the complexity for auto OEMs and Tier One vendors who supply the connected car industry,” said Mahbubul Alam, CTO/CMO, Movimento. “Rather than worrying about maintaining all the different software and firmware versions, we created a centralized solution from car to cloud. You don’t have to provision every ECU with a dedicated software agent, which reduces CPU and memory requirements, along with overall costs.”

Movimento’s software update client runs on the Legato™ Linux Embedded Application Framework available on Sierra Wireless 4G automotive modules. Through the Sierra Wireless AirVantage cloud platform, the Movimento solution enables automakers to seamlessly upgrade all vehicle software.

Today’s mobile workforce needs to connect more technology in and around their vehicles to enhance safety and responsiveness. The MP70 serves as a purpose-built, high-performance vehicle networking solution that enables multiple high-bandwidth applications to work simultaneously, more than 10 times faster and four times further from the vehicle than ever before. For example, a typical law enforcement vehicle hosts a laptop for dispatch and records management, an electronic citation system, live digital video surveillance, body-worn cameras and automated license plate recognition (ALPR) systems. With the MP70, all of these systems can connect to a high-speed vehicle area network, with both gigabit Ethernet and 802.11ac Wi-Fi supported, and share a secure LTE-A cellular connection that enables the dispatcher to access all of the systems in real time.

Sierra Wireless have announced that Transdev, a leading international transport operator, has selected QoS Telecom to deploy and operate WiFi Internet on-board services in buses using Sierra Wireless AirLink® LTE gateways. QoS Telecom is also using the secure, cloud-based Sierra Wireless AirLink Management Service to monitor the gateways in real time and remotely manage the deployment.

Transdev is a world leader in mobility, guiding and supporting local transport authorities from pre-project phase, to project support and development, to everyday operation of transport networks. Sierra Wireless have released an advanced fleet management feature to support the company’s industry-leading AirLink® GX450 mobile gateway, allowing it to collect OBD-II vehicle telemetry data. This added functionality will enable large organizations and fleet management solution providers to rapidly develop applications to monitor vehicle health and performance, helping them reduce costs, streamline operations and increase efficiency.

Managing a vehicle-based workforce involves a large group of stakeholders, including operations, IT and fleet management. Sierra Wireless and Valeo collaborate on next-generation telematics control units for connected car services

Smart embedded modules from Sierra Wireless provide automotive-grade cellular connectivity for emergency response services in Russia
Sierra Wireless  today announced that Valeo, the global automotive products and systems company, has selected smart automotive modules from Sierra Wireless for a new generation of telematics control units to enable connected car services internationally.

The first deployment of the Valeo and Sierra Wireless telematics solution will be in vehicles built by the global automaker Geely for the Russian market. The solution will enable the emergency response system that is required under ERA-GLONASS for new vehicles in Russia. Geely is a multinational automaker with international subsidiaries, including Volvo and the London Taxi Company.

Sierra Wireless announces LTE Cat-1 design win with Maestro for fleet and asset tracking worldwide

AirPrime® HL Series provides Maestro with LTE Cat-1 cellular connectivity for track-and-trace devices that are deployed in harsh mobile environments

Vancouver, Canada-December 09, 2015

Sierra Wireless  today announced that Maestro Wireless Solutions Limited, a leading provider of tracking devices for IoT applications globally, has announced its first LTE Cat-1 tracker based on the AirPrime HL Series from Sierra Wireless. Maestro’s newest tracker, the ruggedized MT-44, provides fleet and asset tracking capabilities in harsh mobile environments using the LTE Cat-1 module with maximum data rates of 10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink.

The HL Series uses the CF3™ form factor from Sierra Wireless that is footprint-compatible across product lines and network technologies, and is fully interchangeable with future versions of the modules including LTE-M variants when they become available.

LTE-M is a Low-Power Wide Area (LPWA) technology that will provide a highly efficient cellular option with lower radio-frequency complexity, significantly reduced power consumption (up to 10 years of service on a single AA battery), better in-building signal penetration, and lower costs. Sierra Wireless is an active contributor to the LTE-M standard definition process within the 3GPP and has committed to launching compatible modules timed with network deployments, expected to begin in 2017.

The LTE Cat-1 modules from Sierra Wireless will be commercially available from co-star in January 2016 on the HL Series.

Sierra Wireless  today announced that Itron has selected AirPrime HL Series modules to enable cellular connectivity in its latest line of smart gas meters. The point-to-point residential meters will begin shipping later this quarter to support smart metering initiatives across Europe, beginning with a deployment in Italy.
Itron selected Sierra Wireless based on the company’s smart metering expertise and the global reach the AirPrime HL Series provides. The two companies have previously announced their collaboration to provide smart electrical meters. This is the first time they have collaborated to provide connected gas meters.

The HL Series uses the new CF3™ form factor from Sierra Wireless, which is footprint-compatible across product lines and network technologies and will remain fully interchangeable with future versions of the modules, including those for LTE-M networks when they become available. LTE-M technology is expected to provide a highly efficient cellular LPWA (Low-Power Wide Area) technology option for smart metering and smart grid applications, with lower radio-frequency complexity, significantly reduced power consumption (up to 10 years of service on a single AA battery), better in-building signal penetration, and lower costs. Sierra Wireless is an active contributor to the LTE-M standard definition process within the 3GPP and has committed to launching compatible modules timed with network deployments, expected to begin in 2017.

Sierra Wireless have announced that the IoT Acceleration Platform, the industry’s first integrated service platform that combines cloud, Internet of Things (IoT) hardware, and managed connectivity services for worldwide deployments, is gaining traction in industrial applications across diverse organizations and geographies. The new IoT Acceleration Platform is unique in that it provides global multi-operator coverage by combining Sierra Wireless and third-party network operator SIMs, all managed from a single unified connectivity platform. The platform is proving equally valuable for large organizations like Veolia Water Technologies UK, looking to develop managed IoT services for customers, or innovative startups like Nube, with new IoT applications.

Single platform accelerates time to market for Veolia Water Technologies UK

One customer that has already taken advantage of the IoT Acceleration Platform is Veolia Water Technologies UK, specialists in pure water systems and process water solutions. Veolia’s Vision Air service, which provides customers with remote status and performance monitoring of critical parameters such as flow, pressure, temperature, and conductivity for their water treatment systems, was developed in collaboration with Sierra Wireless. The solution uses Sierra Wireless devices and all aspects of the IoT Acceleration Platform, including connectivity.

Getting to market quickly while reducing technical risk is key for IoT innovator Nube

Nube is the first cloud-based IoT solution for monitoring LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) gas levels and consumption. Nube has developed an IoT subscription-based solution – from the sensor installed on the tank to the mobile and web applications used both by consumers and energy companies – to monitor tank levels and conditions, order refills, complete payment and analyze data from the connected tanks throughout Mexico and Latin America.

Nube chose to power its innovative service using a wireless module from Sierra Wireless that is integrated with the connectivity, application enablement and operations management services from the IoT Acceleration Platform. This allows Nube to focus on optimizing its user experience instead of building IoT infrastructure.
