Exclusive partnership with Vauxhall for pre-installed telematics

18 May 2017 – Vauxhall / Opel and Masternaut have announced an exclusive partnership to provide fleet telematics services to commercial vans. As of May 2017, businesses can purchase Opel and Vauxhall vans with Masternaut’s telematics devices pre-installed, eliminating deployment time, hassle, and cost. These vehicles are then managed via the industry-leading platform Masternaut Connect, which helps customers realise substantial gains in safety, savings, service excellence, and sustainability. This offer will be available in the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

The benefits in short:

  • Management of commercial fleet data via a powerful B2B software platform
  • Customers avoid the cost, hassle and time of installing telematics
  • One partner to talk to – get everything from the Opel or Vauxhall dealership

Industry game-changer

This partnership doesn’t only help Vauxhall respond to business customers’ needs, it is a significant milestone for the rapidly growing commercial fleet telematics industry. Industry analysts estimate that over 10 million commercial vehicles in Europe will be managed with telematics by 2020, representing growth of 20% per year. Part of this growth will come from reducing hurdles to deployment, which include taking productive vehicles off the road and incurring separate installation charges.

The CEO of Masternaut, Dhruv Parekh, believes that pre-installed telematics is a game changer: “The telematics industry has witnessed impressive growth in recent years, but many companies still want easier installation. Despite its proven benefits, telematics is still only installed in a tenth of European commercial vehicles. We are proud to partner exclusively with Opel and Vauxhall to bring Masternaut’s leading technology to market in a simple and efficient way.”

With connected car and autonomous vehicle trends accelerating quickly, vehicle manufacturers are investing heavily in technology development and strategic partnerships. Opel and Vauxhall are part of GM, the second OEM to partner with market leader Masternaut, following PSA Group’s Peugeot, Citroën and DS. While Vauxhall use their own technology for cars, they sought an experienced partner to serve their business customers’ light commercial vehicles.

Technology that saves time, money and lives

Vauxhall chose Masternaut as their exclusive partner due to their industry-leading technology which, unlike other devices, reads data directly from the vehicle in a fully secure way, without risk of interference with vehicle systems. Steffen Raschig, Director Commercial Vehicles Opel & Vauxhall, said, “We were already interested in working with Masternaut, as they are one of the largest telematics providers globally. We decided to build a deeper partnership as we learned more about Masternaut’s patented hardware. The device provides read-only access to all vehicle data, providing our customers much richer insights than other telematics devices offer. We were also impressed with Masternaut’s new enterprise-grade Connect platform, which is intuitive and easy-to-use.”

With Masternaut Connect, customers have real-time visibility into vehicle locations and journeys, and they also receive smart reports on driver behaviour, timesheets, vehicle utilisation, and routes. Customers can add an in-cab driving coach that provides immediate feedback and has been shown to reduce speeding by up to 70%.

Masternaut recently conducted research across 10,000 vehicles in its customer base, finding that its technology lowered fuel consumption by 220 litres per vehicle and total fleet running costs by £660 per vehicle annually, resulting in a 3-5x ROI. In addition, smart reports and in-cab coaching help drivers to significantly reduce harsh driving events and speeding, keeping them safe on the roads. Every year, Masternaut’s 10,000+ customers avoid 300 accidents and reduce the release of CO2 by 230 million kg.

The PSA Group and Masternaut have partnered to help businesses run safer, cleaner and more productive fleets. The partnership will see Masternaut Connect telematics platform more easily accessible to European Peugeot, Citroën, DS connected cars and light commercial vehicles from early 2017.

Customers will benefit from Masternaut’s next generation telematics services to optimise the cost per mile of their vehicle, boost productivity, improve driver safety and reduce the fleet’s carbon footprint.

Masternaut is one of the leading providers of fleet telematics and vehicle tracking services in Europe. Masternaut’s services will be available for all PSA Group vehicles through the “Connect Fleet Management” program, using PSA Group telematics technology. Masternaut’s services can also be used in fleets comprised of other automotive brands, using Masternaut’s nonintrusive, patented CANBus telematics technology.

Data from all vehicles is fed back over the air in real-time to the Masternaut Connect online platform. Fleet managers can reduce the total cost of ownership of their fleet through the monitoring of fuel consumption, driver behaviour, emissions or geofencing in a consistent and effective way.

Dhruv Parekh, CEO of Masternaut, commented, “Masternaut’s partnership with PSA will improve the customer experience and reduce barriers for telematics adoption. It gives our customers choice and reduces the hassle of deploying telematics. We are excited to work with PSA Group to increase the usage of telematics so we can help improve safety on the roads and the CO2 emissions in our communities.”

Brigitte Courtehoux, Head of the Connected Services and New Mobility Solutions business unit of PSA Group, commented, “the PSA Group wants to enable corporate customers to optimise their connected cars through the “Connect Fleet Management” program, and by working in association with Masternaut, we are providing a way for fleet managers to reduce their vehicle’s total cost of ownership. Our partnership allows PSA Group to offer market-leading services in Europe, which is a significant step in PSA Group’s strategy in mobility services.”

The installed base of fleet management systems in Europe will reach 10.6 million by 2020
The number of active fleet management systems deployed in commercial vehicle fleets in Europe was 5.3 million in Q4-2015, according to a new research report from the M2M/IoT analyst firm Berg Insight. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.9 percent, this number is expected to reach 10.6 million by 2020. All the top-10 vendors have today more than 100,000 active units in Europe.

TomTom’s subscriber base has grown both organically and by acquisitions during the past years and the company has now reached the position as the largest provider of fleet management solutions on the European market and reached an installed base of about 529,000 units at year-end 2015. Masternaut is still in second place and had achieved an installed base of an estimated 350,000 units at the year-end. Berg Insight ranks Microlise as the third largest player in terms of active installed base with around 175,000 units. Trakm8, ABAX, Teletrac Navman, Transics, Trimble and OCEAN (Orange) also have more than 100,000 active devices in the field.

The HGV manufacturers are now growing their subscriber bases considerably in Europe thanks to standard line fitment of fleet management solutions. Dynafleet by Volvo, FleetBoard by Daimler and Scania Fleet Management are the most successful with active subscriber bases of 81,000 units, 86,000 units and 133,000 units respectively as of Q4-2015. The consolidation trend on this market continued in 2016. “Nine major mergers and acquisitions have taken place in the past three quarters among the vendors of fleet management systems in Europe”, said Johan Fagerberg, Senior Analyst, Berg Insight. TomTom acquired Finder in Poland in December 2015, which added another 60,000 vehicles to its installed base.

ITmobile operating from the Netherlands was acquired by Canadian Fleet Complete in December 2015. Viasat entered the Polish market when CMA Monitoring was acquired in April 2016 adding 18,000 vehicle subscriptions and later in July the company also picked up EMIXIS that is headquartered in Belgium adding another 23,000 subscriptions.

The investment firm Sofindev acquired a majority stake in GeoDynamics in April. GSGroup has acquired three companies in the past years and the most recent one was PPCT in Finland in May. Later in June, it was announced that Verizon had signed an agreement to acquire Telogis. The latest transaction was done in August when Verizon acquired also Fleetmatics for a price tag of US$ 2.4 billion to become the largest fleet management solution vendor worldwide. The two recent deals mean that Verizon’s telematics unit will have more than 1.6 million vehicles under management. Mr. Fagerberg anticipates that the market consolidation of the still overcrowded industry will continue in 2016–2017.

BigChange, which developed the technology and owns the intellectual property, achieved sales of £2m last year and is on course for £4m in 2016. It is expected to break even later this year.

Mr Port is forecasting earnings of up to £4m and turnover of £20m by 2020.

The company has built a base of more than 300 customers, including names such as HSS, Baxi Commercial, Ringway Jacobs (Transport for London), Serco, Morrison Utility Services and Elliott Hire as well as many SMEs. Subscriptions cost £49.95 a month.

Impra-Gas, the plumbing company co-owned by Lord Sugar and Joseph Valente, winner of The Apprentice 2015, signed up earlier this year.

Mr Port is planning to raise £2m via a sale of a 5% shareholding and bond issue, which are eligible under the tax-efficient Enterprise Investment Scheme. The Series A fundraising is based on a company valuation of £20m.

Mr Port said the fundraising is attracting “a great deal of interest” and the company is in talks with a number of potential investors and financial institutions.

He added: “Some people could say we are the Uber of the service and transport sectors.“

The fundraising will allow BigChange to invest its technology and increase sales and marketing.

Mr Port said the company is developing a “disruptive” new technology for the fleet insurance market to increase health and safety for drivers. He said he wants British businesses to be as well run as possible.

Fueltek Fuel Management & Masternaut Telematics: taking the driver out of the loop

FUELTEK, well known suppliers of end-to-end fleet fuel management solutions are delighted to announce a partnership with vehicle telematics specialist MASTERNAUT to offer a reliable simple-to-use solution that improves the quality of information captured at the point of refuelling.

FUELTEK’S established Datadisk fuel management system when coupled with MASTERNAUT’S proven on board telematics can download information about the vehicle which is to be fuelled. Traditionally data has been captured using keypad entries or data capture equipment with varies degrees of accuracy. The FUELTEK Datadisk system automatically identifies the vehicle and then talks to the MASTERNAUT telematics software to establish the exact vehicle mileage at the point of fuelling.   “Asking a driver to enter the mileage reading at the point of fuelling has always been problematic, most of the electronic data capture equipment has proved less than robust, leading to unreliable usage which creates unreliable statistical analysis when producing reports,” says Martin Devine, Managing Director of Fueltek

“The relationship with MASTERNAUT has helped us develop a fantastic innovation simplifying almost every aspect of a fleet’s fuel logging and management. Datadisk technology makes sure that whenever a vehicle is fuelled, the system knows exactly how much fuel is taken on-board, the previous and current mileage readings ensuring the relationship of fuel pumped to the mileage is absolute”.

“The combined service enables us to finally take operator error out of the equation for our Fuel Management applications. When the system can automatically identify each vehicle as it is presented for fuelling and automatically log both its fuel demand and logged mileage, then the operator can be absolutely confident that his fuel security is complete.” affirmed Martin Devine.

All Fuel monitoring reporting and management functions are done through Fueltek FMO web based software.

Masternaut’s patented MuxyGPS technology combines non-intrusive installation protecting warranty and servicing with contactless CANbus reading technology reporting on vehicle odometer capture – an improvement on GPS or MapMatching technology. This means that reporting error rates are transformed regardless of vehicle type or operation.

“Masternaut’s brand of telematics is beyond traditional map-based software and focuses on the benefits for multiple business applications. Our Partnership with Fueltek is the latest in string of innovations where we can combine products and applications to uncover an increasing number of value-added services to our customers” Commented Steve Towe, Managing Director, Masternaut.

“With our partnership with Fueltek we are delighted we can offer customers return-on-investment measured in process time, automated data collection and new layers of data accuracy improvement that will assist the provision of strategic business information including fleet economy or emission reporting”.
