Three UK strengthens Internet of Things with Low Power Wide Area Capability

Three UK and CKH Innovations Opportunities Development (CKH IOD, a unit of CK Hutchison’s telecom division) are piloting a Low Power Wide Area network (LPWA), which is the first step in a nationwide network roll out that will support mass deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

LPWA networks – made up of Narrowband IoT and LTE-M technologies – provide a cost-effective way to wirelessly connect IoT devices which monitor and control everything from key infrastructure to smart buttons. Sectors such as energy, logistics, building management, and transport can be digitally transformed by LPWA technologies.

IoT devices used in these sectors are generally deployed on a massive scale. Often, the devices need to be placed in difficult environments for wireless (or wired) connections. LPWA technology solves this connectivity challenge in three ways: it covers a large area; the radio signal penetrates deep inside buildings and underground, where infrastructure IoT devices are often placed; and low-energy NB-IoT devices can last 5 or more years in the field. LPWA devices can operate without a fixed power source, meaning they can remain in situ and maintenance free for long periods.

The Three UK LPWA pilot network has been set up at the Integrated Transport Electricity Gas Research Laboratory in Gateshead UK (InTEGReL). The lab is a collaboration between Northern Gas Networks, Newcastle University, Northern Powergrid, Northumbrian Water and Siemens.

The LPWA at InTEGReL will enable researchers to deploy wireless devices throughout the experimental energy network to identify problems and gather performance data. In a live environment, LPWA technology helps energy companies improve service reliability, detect faults, make customer billing more accurate and lower carbon emissions.

Three UK’s Wholesale division currently provides IoT connectivity to partners such as ARM, Arkessa, AT&T, Wireless Logic and Mobius. These partnerships allow Three to target IoT industry verticals including retail, transport, logistics, infrastructure and utilities. The LPWA network enables Three Wholesale to extend the portfolio of services that it offers and work with a range of customers on new use cases which require low bandwidth and wide coverage.

Three UK will draw on extensive LPWA experience CKH IOD has acquired with other CK Hutchison telecoms companies – Three Austria, Sweden and Hong Kong. In Austria, for example, LPWA technology is used by a range of companies in energy, transport, logistics and building management to track assets and monitor energy usage. Three Sweden were the first mobile network in Sweden to launch narrow-band IoT services nationally and are actively partnering with Utility providers on smart-metering applications.

Our industry needs new technologies such as this to support our ambitions to decarbonise gas systems, through projects such as H21 to transition to hydrogen for heat and meet the UK Net Zero target by 2050.”

Nigel Watson, CIO Northumbria Water, said LPWA will be an enabler for the delivery of the company’s strategic objectives. “We recognise the power of innovative technologies to enhance what we’re already doing. IoT is a key tool for us to detect and proactively respond to the impacts of climate change,” he said. “We’re excited to be involved in the LPWA IoT test bed and look forward to the learnings it will provide.”

AT&T reports rapid connected car acceleration

MWL-Penrose_ShanghaiAT&T is connecting 1.5 million vehicles per quarter onto its network as telematics continues to lead the operator’s IoT charge, executive Chris Penrose (pictured) told Mobile World Live.

In a wide-ranging interview at MWC Shanghai, the president of AT&T’s IoT unit said consumers and businesses alike were embracing connected car technology, adding the sector: “continues to have incredibly fast adoption”.

“Automobile manufacturers have really seen the value of having connectivity for their purposes – being able to update…and make that car better,” he noted.

“The consumer is also seeing the benefit of having everything they have on their phone in their car.”

Other sectors identified by Penrose as “hot” currently, include asset tracking, fleet management and smart city deployments. He added the healthcare industry was an emerging one he had confidence in, despite regulation challenges.

With so many diverse use cases falling under the IoT banner, Penrose said AT&T’s decision to deploy both LTE-M and NB-IoT networks allows it to host technologies with a range of connectivity requirements all using licensed spectrum.

CISCO JASPER – Cisco Jasper will enable visitors to experience IoT services in a life-like smart city environment. Visitors will see how businesses globally are using the Control Center automated connectivity platform to deliver connected services that enhance their customers’ experiences and create new sources of revenue. Examples will include:

Sequans and Gemalto revolutionize IoT connectivity with first genuine LTE Cat M1 technology

World first demonstration at GSMA Mobility Live! highlights greatly improved efficiency
and significantly reduced complexity of LTE-M

 

Gemalto, the world leader in digital security, is partnering with LTE chipmaker Sequans Communications S.A. (NYSE: SQNS) to revolutionize Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity with LTE-M technology. The companies are demonstrating at GSMA Mobility Live! in Atlanta, the first Cat M1 IoT solution, based on Sequans’ genuine Cat M1 chip, delivering the greatest level of network efficiency and simplicity achieved to date. The solution significantly improves power saving capabilities to extend the lifespan of IoT devices while boosting performance in indoor environments. It is ideal for low bandwidth IoT use cases including alarm systems, asset trackers, smart meters, smart city controllers, wearables and industrial sensors. New low-power, wide-area (LPWA) network technologies like LTE-M will give network operators the opportunity to generate significant revenues from the billions of connected things[1].

The LTE-M demonstration leverages a Gemalto wireless module that uses dedicated Cat M1 technology based on Sequans’ Monarch chip to enable a whole new level of low power, low bandwidth IoT connectivity. The module connects to Ericsson’s RBS6000 Multi-Standard base station updated with Cat M1 software. The solution is capable of supporting more than 10 LTE frequency bands from a single hardware device allowing for true global coverage. Dynamic power management technology enables more than 10 years of battery life for standard IoT devices. Samples of Gemalto’s forthcoming LTE Cat M1 wireless module are expected to ship in Q4 2016.
