IoTsens is helping FACSA track and control water management in Castellón

Semiconductor and advanced algorithms company, Semtech, and Internet of Things solutions and services company, IoTsens, have integrated their technology to deliver a smart water solution for Spain.

IoTsens entered a joint venture with FACSA, Spain’s leading integrated water management company, to accurately track and control water management in Castellón, Spain. Established in 1873, FACSA provides services to over four million citizens in 70 cities. In addition to smart water metering, IoTsens provides FACSA with sound, air quality, smart parking, and irrigation solutions among other IoT services for its smart city project.

“Our smart water platform provides Castellón with relevant and valuable information for the daily management and optimisation of its resources,” said Ignacio Llopis, CEO of IoTsens, which is integrating Semtech’s LoRa technology into its smart water platform. “We were able to quickly integrate, deploy and test 600 smart water meters for a proof of concept, paving the way for the current FACSA comprehensive roll-out of 30,000 water meters.”

“The LoRa-based sensors, with their long range and low power capabilities, are able to collect and communicate important household data to accurately track and control water management,” said Vivek Mohan, director of IoT for the wireless and sensing products group at Semtech. “The IoTsens’ system can also quickly detect leaks, breakdowns and manipulation of the water supply network in real-time, preventing loss of service and costly repairs.”

A single base station using LoRa technology enables deep penetration capability for dense urban environments and indoor coverage, while also providing the ability to connect to sensors more than 15-30 miles away in rural areas. It provides a battery lifetime of up to 10 years depending on the application and enables tracking applications without GPS or additional power consumption.

The technology also reduces upfront infrastructure investments and operating costs, as well as end-node sensor costs and, based on the LoRaWAN open protocol, provided by the LoRa Alliance, ensures interoperability among applications, IoT solution providers and telecom operators to speed adoption and deployment.

San Francisco and Colorado are the first North American regions with smart water and smart environment projects deployed with Libelium’s technology connected to LPWAN protocols.

Libelium continues powering the Internet of Things (IoT) development adding LoRaWANand Sigfox wireless connectivity for North America to Waspmote OEM and Waspmote Plug and Sense! sensor devices. San Francisco is one of the first cities to deploy this technology, where Libelium is already developing a Smart Water project with Sigfox and San Francisco County. In Colorado, Libelium technology is also enhancing new projects to monitor weather and environment conditions with LoRaWAN connectivity.

Libelium keeps offering the widest interoperability in the great array of connectivity choices for the IoT. The company is joining forces with LoRaWAN and Sigfox global network in response to strong demand for low-energy, long-range and cost efficient IoT connectivity in North America. In terms of network coverage, Semtech is partnering with Comcast to deploy LoRaWAN networks in 30 cities while Sigfox is expanding its network to 100 US cities.

“We are successfully offering these protocols in their European version since 2015 and checking its viability for environment, pollution, water quality and smart parking applications. We strongly believe that making them available in their American version will speed up market adoption in the 900 MHz markets” states Alicia Asín, Libelium’s CEO.

Customers can make their choice of LPWAN preferred protocol for Waspmote Plug & Sense! in 900MHz or 868MHz bands -depending on geographic destination- when ordering except for Smart Parking model, where both radios (LoRaWAN / Sigfox) are always included. “We have managed to offer a dual radio in our Smart Parking node at a very competitive price, which increases our customers’ options, one of our design principles. They can compare the performance of both technologies in one installation, work in hybrid networks or change from one to another easily from the Cloud. We consider this kind of features crucial to keep a healthy and competitive IoT landscape” explains Asín.

With this update, Libelium IoT Sensor Platform is ready to use the 900-930 MHz band forthe U.S., Canada, Mexico, Singapore, etc. The platform currently includes FCC and IC certifications for the US and Canada.

South Korea launches commercial IoT network

SK Telecom have announced the completion of the nationwide deployment of Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN)* in South Korea based on LoRa technology; the launch of price plans for LoRa-based IoT services; and its plans to vitalize the IoT ecosystem.

The company finished building LoRaWAN across the country by end of June, six months earlier than its initial schedule, covering 99 percent of the population. By securing both nationwide LTE-M and LoRaWAN, which are two main pillars of the IoT network, SK Telecom said that it is now fully ready to create valuable business opportunities in the IoT era. The company had completed nationwide LTE-M rollout in March, 2016.

To promote the growth of the IoT market, SK Telecom plans to offer attractive price plans and develop innovative IoT services, while offering strong support for SMEs. To this end, the company will invest a total of KRW 100 billion by the end of 2017. It expects these efforts to lead to rapid expansion of the IoT industry by connecting over 4 million things to its IoT-dedicated networks by the end of 2017.

SK Telecom unveiled new price plans for LoRaWAN-based IoT services. The “Band IoT” plans come in six different tiers – i.e. from Band IoT 35 (approx. USD 0.3) priced at KRW 350 to Band IoT 200 priced at KRW 2,000(approx. USD 1.75) – depending on data use (refer to table 1) to allow SK Telecom’s customers – both enterprises and individuals – to choose one that suits the needs of their services. The Band Lora plans are highly affordable – costing merely one-tenth of SK Telecom’s LTE-based IoT services – and thus are expected to support active development and provision of diverse IoT services by easing the cost burden of startups and SMEs. The company is also offering diverse discount benefits for enterprise customers depending on their contract period and the number of lines they use.

For instance, a gas meter, which transmits relatively a small amount of data can be used by signing up for Band IoT 35, while a service that requires real-time communication like lighting control service can be used by signing up for Band IoT 200.

 

Considering the characteristics of the LPWA network, SK Telecom plans to develop services in the areas of metering, tracking and monitoring.

In the area of metering, the company is currently focusing on Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)*, which enables the utilities companies to not only accurately measure/monitor usage but also control the metering devices. SK Telecom has been conducting a pilot project on AMI with SK E&S since November 2015, and plans to expand the service coverage to more regions of the country in July 2016. Going forward, the company will launch AMI services for other utilities including water and electricity.

* Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is an architecture for automated, two-way communication between a smart utility meter with an IP address and a utility company. AMI is expected to enhance user convenience and safety through its sophisticated remote metering & control features as well as automatic safety capabilities.

SK Telecom is also developing in tracking services to identify and track the location of vehicles, people/things, and assets. In cooperation with the local governments, the company plans to launch “Safe Watch,” a wearable designed to enhance the safety of children and the elderly in July 2016.

Moreover, SK Telecom will offer monitoring services capable of controlling and managing manufacturing/public/commercial facilities. For instance, monitoring service for a company that has a large-scale production facility will ensure that the equipment within the facility are operated in an optimal manner and the production environment is kept safe at all times. Environmental monitoring of CO2 concentration, temperature/humidity, as well as hazardous substances – e.g., measuring concentration levels of radon in the atmosphere and soil – can also be provided. In August 2016, SK Telecom will start an environmental monitoring service at Changjo (Creative) Village in Sejong.

Furthermore, the company plans to launch a total of 20 LoRa-based IoT services by the end of 2016, including a manhole monitoring service (in September) and a real-time shared parking service (in October).

Besides developing and launching IoT services of its own, SK Telecom will be making multifaceted efforts to vitalize the IoT ecosystem by encouraging the participation of developers, SMEs and startups. To this end, the company plans to set up a comprehensive program named ‘Partner Hub Program’ to nurture partners. Through the program, SK Telecom will share its expertise and knowhow, provide training and conduct joint development/ marketing.

To support the development of IoT services and devices, SK Telecom will create a space called ‘IoT Open Testbed’ for SMEs and startups at its Bundang Building to offer a one-stop development environment – which encompasses network, device and platform – for IoT services. At IoT Open Testbed, SMEs and startups will be able to verify their IoT devices, carry out tests to check interworking between their device and the IoT network/platform, and receive technical/service consultation.

SK Telecom also began providing LoRa modules free of charge on July 1, 2016. Aimed at facilitating the development and launch of LoRa services, the company will provide a total of 100,000 units of LoRa modules for free. Also, the low cost of the LoRa module – which is just one-fifth of that of an existing LTE module – will contribute to the development of the wide variety of IoT devices.

Today at Intertraffic, Libelium has presented the new version of Waspmote Plug&Sense! Smart Parking, the solution for Smart Cities that allows citizens to detect available parking spots.

The new device is easier and cheaper to deploy as it is mounted on the road surface. Unlike most market versions, it does not need to dig a hole in the ground for installation reducing installation time from 30 to 5 minutes and allowing to be replaced by another unit in case of maintenance in just 10 minutes.

The new device has a smaller size -reduced over 50%-, higher accuracy and reliability, and faster time of detection. Besides, temperature does not affect the behaviour of readings.

New sensor system is fully compatible with LPWAN radio technologies –LoRaWANand Sigfox– to enable long range and low power consumption. It can be connected with both radios for the European 868 MHz band and for the 900-930 MHz band (US/Canada). One unique feature of the system is that it allows to use both radio technologies at the same time or change from one to another easily from the Cloud.

With the new sensor system, one base station can give service to thousands of devices around a range of several kilometers in urban environment. This fact provides lower costs of installation since the number of base stations can be dramatically reduced. Besides, the new sensor model has been optimized for really low-power operation, so the battery lifetime is extended up to 10 years easily.

The new parking node has been certified with the CE/FCC/IC marks and provides a robust software which works out-of-the-box. Developers do not need to programme the nodes but specify the values of key parameters in the firmware such as working cycle or night mode to be ready to work. Remote management and bidirectional communication allows to change several parameters of the nodes from the Cloud. This means that thousands of nodes can be reprogrammed just setting the right values from our web browser in the management platform.
