Motorola Solutions Demonstrates How LTE-Based Technology Helps to Prevent Incidents in Brazil

Improved safety and coordination enabled by applications helps identify criminals, find lost children and even prevent crime

Using a special vehicle equipped with a mobile long-term evolution (LTE) security solution, Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) created a dedicated network to demonstrate the benefits that applications and high-speed data, along with mission-critical communications, bring to airports, logistics operations and public safety in the Federal District and São Paulo. Key stakeholders attended the demonstrations of LTE technology geared toward critical communications for both public and private organizations to learn about multi-media collaboration with real-time video, mapping, images, facial recognition and response teams, and about interoperability between mobile and fixed-line systems.

By creating an LTE “bubble,” or defined area of coverage, around a special vehicle, it is possible to use applications such as Command Central Streaming, which transmits buffer-less video to the command center and other personnel in real time. The application allows officers in the field and personnel in the command center to benefit from clear streaming video to help in expanding their view of an incident and making the best possible decisions.

Information is put in the hands of officers and on the screens at command centers thanks to the LEX L10 Mission Critical LTE Handheld, and includes other applications such as WAVE™ Work Group Communications, which extends push-to-talk (PTT) communications to broadband networks, connecting individuals in the same team who are using different devices, such a smartphones, computers or radios.

Other applications, like the one that makes it possible to recognize the face of a suspect, were also demonstrated. After identifying a suspect, other applications help to alert unified groups by sharing information through images, videos, and maps, while others allow the respondents to design a strategic plan.

For the private sector, applications can help with tasks like identifying faults in electrical networks, monitoring the location of workers and even sending an automatic alarm to the command center if a single worker is fallen and needs help.

In addition, the Secure Mobile Office application, developed in Brazil, offers multi-media collaboration, notes over maps in real time, text messaging, video, voice and remote databases access, with advanced encryption.

“Smart communications systems are really being used, and Brazil is on the cutting edge of dedicated public safety LTE,” said Elton Borgonovo, country manager of Motorola Solutions Brazil. “Together with traditional radio communications, a dedicated LTE network plays an important role both in the public and private sectors by providing a complete and collaborative vision among different devices and systems.”

The system presented by Motorola Solutions demonstrates the advances in LTE technology for smart public safety solutions in Brazil. The projects tested in Brazil serve as a model for dedicated communications in other regions, for large events, routine security operations or emergency situations, and show how the public and private sectors’ communication needs can be met in diverse segments of the economy.

This demonstration series was already held in Brasilia and will be held in São Paulo during the month of July.

Renault and Orange join forces to explore uses for 4G on future vehicles

The partnership provides Renault and Orange with a real-life testing framework for exploring new connectivity applications on vehicles using high-speed technologies.

Tomorrow’s vehicles will be hyper-connected. Everywhere, where driving circumstances permit, motorists will be able to access their professional and personal digital worlds from their vehicles in complete safety. To prepare for that future, Renault and Orange have joined forces as part of a research project on testing the automotive uses of very-high-speed, 4G/LTE (Long Term Evolution) connectivity.

Under the partnership, Orange has rolled out 4G in advance at Renault’s research and testing facilities. The aim is to enable both partners’ teams to test in real-life situations the uses enabled by very-high-speed mobile technology, ranging from virtual office and cloud gaming to video conferencing. An initial test is underway on the NEXT TWO prototype based on Renault ZOE and to be presented on the Renault stand at the upcoming Le Web’13 conference.

Commenting, Rémi Bastien, Head of Engineering Innovation at Renault, said: “This partnership is an example of an effective working relationship between two very different worlds. We were able to benefit ahead of time from a high-speed LTE network and from Orange’s expertise, with an opportunity to take advantage of the network for our prototype of the connected vehicle of the future.

Connected cars make travelling more efficient through communicating services and stand as a major development priority in Orange’s strategy”.

Connected vehicles are already a reality. With R-Link, Renault brings its customers an integrated and connected touch tablet rated by the SBD firm as Europe’s user-friendliest multimedia system. R-Link, available on most Renault range models, already features nearly 100 apps. Connectivity-wise, the R-Link system relies on the know-how of Orange Business Services, which supplies all the SIM M2M cards used on board equipped Renault cars.
