Haltian delivers one of the largest IoT solutions in Europe – Multi-million deal with one of Europe’s leading textile service companies


Finnish Internet of Things (IoT) device manufacturer Haltian supplies Lindström with over 100,000 IoT devices and a managed IoT data layer service. The multi-million euro deal for one of the largest public IoT installations in Europe to date, was made in late 2017. Smart technology will be rapidly implemented in all of Lindström’s towel dispensers.

It’s a challenge for businesses to keep up with the pace of today’s ever changing digital world. Lindström, one of Europe’s leading textile service companies, paves the way for future IoT solutions

Together with Haltian Thingsee and Wirepas Mesh, Lindström has created a new service offering called Flowability Smart Washroom Service. The solution offers two-way communication and location information and provides reliable wireless connectivity for Lindström Group customers across their facilities. With this smart solution, Lindström increases efficiency by cutting waste and channeling work in a smarter way, thereby decreasing costs.

The Flowability Smart Washroom Service will be installed in shopping centers, hospitals and other public spaces to mention a few. A sensor retrofitted to the towel dispenser measures towel usage in real time. The sensor sends notifications to a site maintenance team when it is necessary to change towel rolls, which helps in planning work more efficiently and in decreasing costs.

The solution developed by Haltian and Lindström is based on Haltian’s new Thingsee IoT Devices platform. The platform allows new IoT solutions to reach commercial maturity faster and easier by offering customizable IoT devices with managed data layer services. The platform is completed with plug & play IoT devices, solutions customization services and lifecycle services – providing customers a smooth journey from ideas to commercial operations.

“Retrofitting wireless sensors to existing company assets and processes is a fast-growing business. We have now more than 25 active pilots running globally in industries varying from manufacturing to asset tracking and facility management. Our growing device and service portfolio provides a good starting point for building new IoT solutions. Ericsson Study: How Network Slicing Pays Off


  • Network slicing has the potential to offer economic benefits in terms of higher revenues and lower operating expenditures, if operational automation and a step change in the number of operator service launches is assumed
  • Study found that network slicing is fastest, most cost-effective way to achieve service scalability
  • Payback of investment to automate networks is rapid

In a new study with operator BT, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) quantifies the benefits of network slicing for operators. When coupled with operational automation, network slicing is proven to be a smart investment to reduce operating expenditures and increase CAPEX efficiency, while enabling fast implementation and better utilization of devices related to the Internet of Things (IoT).

Mobile data traffic continues to grow at a rapid pace along with adoption of connected devices. In the Ericsson Mobility Report, around 18 billion IoT devices are forecast by 2022. Connected IoT devices include connected cars, machines, meters, sensors, point-of-sales terminals, consumer electronics and wearables.

Network slicing allows operators to segment the network to support particular services and deploy multiple logical networks for different service types over one common infrastructure.  The joint study looked at three ways to introduce new services into a network: via one multi-service network; via individual networks with dedicated resources; or via network slicing including operational automation.

Marielle Lindgren, Head of Ericsson United Kingdom, says: “We found that over a five-year period, introducing new services by using network slicing and operational automation generated 35 percent more revenue than by using one multi-service network. The revenue increased 15 percent when compared to several networks with dedicated resources, demonstrating how the technology enables market stimulation, faster time to market, and opportunities from smaller niche services.”

Maria Cuevas, Head of Mobile Core Networks Research at BT, says: “We’re positioned to bring millions of devices onto our networks as the IoT ecosystem grows. This study gives us guidance as to where our investments will achieve the best results. The more services we deploy with network slicing, the greater economic benefit we will see, enabling us to better serve our customers. In order to achieve this vision, it is important that the industry provides cost-effective solutions to support end-to-end orchestration and adds automation to the operations and management of network slices.”


Specifically, the study’s base case was a deployment ramping up to 40 annual service launches over five years. Network slicing resulted in the equivalent of 40 percent reduction in OPEX, 35 percent increase in revenue potential and an overall impact of 150 percent increased economic benefit, under the baseline assumptions made. When scaled up, the gains also increased. All benefits were considered in terms of the core network only.

Marielle Lindgren continues: “As applications and use cases for evolving technology become more complex, so will the characteristics of connecting them. Simply put, networks will need to adapt. The findings clearly show that network slicing provides a logical setup that can be tailored to extend into the as-yet undefined services of the future.”

Nokia introduces worldwide IoT network grid as a service

Espoo, Finland – Nokia has created the Nokia worldwide IoT network grid, a ‘one-stop-shop’, full service model offering seamless IoT connectivity across technologies and geographical borders to address the transport, health, utilities and safety markets.

Nokia WING  will manage the IoT connectivity and services needs of a client’s assets, such as connected cars or connected freight containers, as they move around the globe, reducing the complexity for enterprises who would otherwise be required to work with multiple technology providers.

Drawing on Nokia’s comprehensive technology and services expertise, Nokia WING can be easily and quickly implemented to provide enterprises with ubiquitous connectivity, subscription and device management, security and analytics. Connectivity is enabled by intelligent switching between cellular and non cellular networks. For example, a shipping container linked by satellite in the ocean could switch to being connected by a cellular network near a port.

Nokia will offer a full service model including provisioning, operations, security, billing and dedicated enterprise customer services from key operations command centers. The company will use its own IMPACT IoT platform for device management, subscription management and analytics. Nokia IMPACT subscription management for eSIM will automatically configure connectivity to a communication service provider’s network as the asset crosses geographical borders.

Customers are served on a multi-tenanted basis using a Nokia M2M Core that includes the Nokia Cloud Packet Core, which gives an enterprise customer access to their own discrete segment of the network core.

Communication service providers can quickly take advantage of new business opportunities that will be made available by joining a global federation of IoT connectivity services. By leveraging their excess network capacity they will be able to serve enterprises that require near global IoT connectivity, rapidly and with little effort, to realize new revenue streams. For service providers planning to launch a new IoT business, Nokia can fast track time to market as WING also provides a full white label managed service model, allowing them to offer the service to their customers under their own brand.

Consumers will be able to benefit from a wide range of seamlessly connected IoT applications and devices as Nokia takes the lead in collaborating with communications service providers to create one global IoT grid.
