Autonomous Lorries to be trialed this year on the M6

Convoys of driverless lorries head for the motorway

Automated lorries connected by wireless technology will be trialed on British motorways this year under government plans to be announced in this week’s budget designed to speed up deliveries and cut congestion.

Steering, acceleration and braking will be controlled by the lead driver but all trucks will have an operator in the cab in case of an emergency.

The chancellor is preparing to fund a trial of driverless HGVs as part of a technological revolution on the roads.

The trial is set to take place on the M6 near Carlisle , which could result in convoys of up to ten computer-controlled lorries being driven just metres apart.

Britain is one of the countries at the forefront of autonomous vehicle development and the announcement in next week’s budget is expected to be part of a wider funding boost for research into driverless and connected vehicles.

The move is aimed at improving safety, cutting fatalities and easing congestion on a motorway network already stretched to capacity.

Industry-leading AirLink® GX450 Mobile Gateway from Sierra Wireless now supports advanced vehicle telemetry

sierra wireless

New functionality allows large organizations and fleet management solution providers to rapidly develop applications that reduce operating costs, streamline operations and increase efficiency

Sierra Wireless have released an advanced fleet management feature to support the company’s industry-leading AirLink® GX450 mobile gateway, allowing it to collect OBD-II vehicle telemetry data. This added functionality will enable large organizations and fleet management solution providers to rapidly develop applications to monitor vehicle health and performance, helping them reduce costs, streamline operations and increase efficiency.

Managing a vehicle-based workforce involves a large group of stakeholders, including operations, IT and fleet management. By combining mobile networking and rich vehicle telematics onto a single platform that gathers and reports vehicle diagnostic data directly to applications, this new feature will simplify and centralize vehicle management across an organization. Organizations will no longer need to purchase a separate in-vehicle telematics platform to gather and monitor vehicle health data.

“We added advanced, easy-to-use telemetry to the AirLink® GX450 to enable customers to simplify the adoption of vehicle telemetry solutions, including the ability to leverage their existing investment in fleet communications equipment,” said Jason Krause, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Solutions, Sierra Wireless.

Clevest, a leading provider of mobile workforce management solutions for utilities, has worked closely with Sierra Wireless through the development of the AirLink GX450’s vehicle telemetry feature to produce a complete workforce management and vehicle monitoring solution.

“Our mobile workforce platform is tightly integrated with AirLink gateways,” says Edna Menon, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Clevest. “With the GX450 telemetry feature, our utility customers can take advantage of robust vehicle diagnostic capabilities, in addition to the reliability and ease-of-use of our integrated solutions.”

The AirLink GX450 vehicle telemetry uses an optional OBD-II accessory to collect vehicle diagnostic data and send it to a remote server using an open messaging protocol (MQTT). Vehicle telemetry is ideal for applications in public safety, utilities, emergency and field services, and is designed for large organizations or fleet management solution providers that have the in-house resources to develop their own vehicle monitoring applications. Co-Star Enhance the Network Coverage of Swiss Avalanche Mountain Rescue Teams Comm’s Equipment

Co-Star have helped to enhancing the critical cellular network coverage of an avalanche rescue team based in Meilen Switzerland by suppling a Panorama WM11-DBOX wall mounted antenna.

The WM11-DBOX is a high gain, directional antenna that provides a simple, cost effective way of improving the range of a GSM or 3G networks by transferring high network coverage from the outside of a building to the inside. It can also be used to ensure better connections between machines by offering improved antenna positioning.3G signal is often affected by structural factors resulting in low signal inside buildings. This multiband, ultra high gain panel antenna transmits the 3G signal in the direction of the nearest base station to ensure optimum signal strength.

Designed for mounting on a wall or mast, the WM11-DBOX antenna is waterproof and UV stabilised to withstand the harsh weather conditions in the Swiss Alps.

The antenna comes complete with two ultra low loss coaxial cable extensions (2 meter & 10 meter) which are designed to minimise any signal loss and are terminated with SMA connectors which are the most common RF connectors for mobile communications equipment.

About Co-Star: Co-Star are a global distributor to the mobile communications industry based in Harrogate UK. Our product range includes: Antennas, Wireless Routers, Coaxial cable assemblies and installation consumables.
