2017 Innovation Summit Highlight: Reducing IoT Complexity with Ready-to-Connect Solutions

As the Internet of Things (IoT) becomes essential for running most businesses, the need for reliable, high-quality IoT connectivity solutions grows. That’s why Sierra Wireless hosts the annual Innovation Summit, a conference designed to keep you up to date on the latest IoT technology and the influencers who are making the biggest impact in the industry today. This year, the 2017 Innovation Summit took IoT technology advances to the next level, showcasing the new Sierra Wireless Ready-to-Connect solution that revolutionizes the devices that IoT solutions are built on and how they communicate, on an international scale.

If you couldn’t attend the 2017 Innovation Summit, fear not; we’ve compiled a list of the essential IoT updates that you’ll need to know this year to ensure your IoT device management is simple and streamlined.

2017 Innovation Summit Highlights
This year’s 2017 Innovation Summit attracted more than 400 members of the IoT community. The panels included in-depth information on:

  • LPWA;
  • The future of 5G;
  • IoT security;
  • Open source connectivity;
  • Smart SIM cards; and
  • Device-to-Cloud Global connectivity.

But one of the most innovative highlights at this year’s summit was the Ready-to-Connect IoT Solution panel discussion, where three of Sierra Wireless’ expert staff explained how the Ready-to-Connect solution (modules and routers with pre-integrated global connectivity, IoT management and security) is specifically designed for companies who want to expand their businesses globally, reduce time to market, streamline operations and enable business model flexibility. The 2017 Innovation Summit audience members were some of the first to test the Ready-to-Connect demo, and so far we’re hearing promising feedback about this groundbreaking technology.

One of the greatest concerns that we’ve heard from business owners over the years is that it’s too complicated and time-consuming to expand the scope of their IoT connectivity internationally. Businesses have to negotiate foreign contracts, pay expensive shipping costs to mail SIM cards to far corners of the globe and they’re tasked with managing their devices across dozens of different platforms. Ready-to-Connect solves all of these issues and more, allowing businesses to focus on making great products — instead of struggling with international connectivity challenges.

What is Ready-to-Connect?
The Ready-to-Connect solution combines modules, global mobile networks, SIM cards and an IoT platform in a single package. While this bundle can and should be used for local connectivity, it’s also a lifesaver for businesses that are looking to expand into overseas markets. The more complex your supply chain is, the more you will need the Ready-to-Connect system to manage it all.

Ready-to-Connect Gets Your Product to Market Faster
It can take anywhere from 18 to 24 months — or sometimes longer — to bring an IoT product to market. This time frame grows as you expand into new international markets, since you need to negotiate new carrier contracts and shipping methods. A far-off launch date means a slow ROI, which, in turn, affects your future expansion projects. Many businesses have to wait until they get an investment return in one new country before they can begin expansion to another. Here are just a few ways that expanding into an international market can negatively impact your ROI time.

You’re tasked with:

  • Negotiating contracts with multiple service providers;
  • Managing multiple SKUs;
  • Assembling SIMs and modules manually;
  • Using truck roll support for your products;
  • Managing your subscriptions with different platforms; and
  • Locking yourself into contracts with service providers.

With Ready-to-Connect, you can cut your time to market by as much as 12 months. That includes the time it takes to install hardware, software, SIM cards and the IoT cloud platform. Since you’re getting the wireless modules, global SIM cards and IoT management software from the same company, it’s much faster (and simpler) to ensure that all of these moving pieces are well-integrated with each other from the very start. You don’t have to work on front-end integration or security, since these are already included in the bundle. This will result in a prompter ROI, making the IoT space less risky for you and your shareholders.

Streamlining Global Operations
The goal of Ready-to-Connect is to have a ready-to-deploy product for customers, and to manage all connected products on a single platform. The AirVantage platform can be customized to meet the specific needs of your business. You can even integrate subscriptions from other mobile operators and manage them all from one place. Rather than jumping back and forth between two different platforms to handle mobile subscriptions and devices, you can tackle both via the AirVantage platform, streamlining the entire process. This results in better customer relationships and a far easier accounting process for your company’s SIM subscriptions. In addition, eUICC and eSIM remote provisioning allows you to change network providers quickly without swapping any SIM cards deployed in the field.

Enable New Business Models
The integrated connectivity service inside the Ready-to-Connect solution provides direct access to the connected product, no matter which local service provider the end users would have selected to connect their data. This enables equipment makers to offer updates, maintenance, or any value-added services over-the-air to the end users, to improve their experience and create new revenue. Moreover, the Ready-to-Connect solution is offered as a bundle with flexible pricing and terms. It will enable enterprises to align their revenue with cost, and maximize their business potential. For instance, a startup company may prefer the pay-as-you-go model; whereas a utility company may prefer to pay for 10 years of connectivity service with a single contract to capture the maximum government funding.

Now that the 2017 Innovation Summit is over, it’s time to reflect on whether your current IoT connectivity solutions are working at peak efficiency. With Sierra Wireless’ latest Ready-to-Connect solution, you can bring your business into the modern world of IoT quickly and easily. Sierra Wireless device-to-cloud technology enables new telematics solution for Arval

European vehicle leasing leader Arval offers expanded connected vehicle management service to enterprise fleet managers, based on Sierra Wireless AirVantage® cloud and AirPrime® embedded modules

Sierra Wireless have announced that Arval, a leader in full service vehicle leasing, fleet management, and usage-based insurance owned by BNP Paribas, has selected Sierra Wireless device-to-cloud technology to build its new global telematics solution.

Arval selected Sierra Wireless because the AirVantage cloud provides an accelerated development path – the cloud platform was already built and integrated with AirPrime embedded modules, and was able to easily connect to third-party application servers and their own web applications. With the wireless integration and management already covered, Arval was able to focus on the portion of the solution that offers value and differentiates it from competitors. In addition, AirVantage leverages standard device protocols, making it compatible with a wide variety of connected devices and future-proof in terms of compatibility with additional devices and services as Arval expands its service offering to its customers.

“Arval is an industry leader with a clear vision of how a connected service model can enable the company to better serve its customers and enhance its core business,” said Emmanuel Walckenaer, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Solutions for Sierra Wireless. “This collaboration demonstrates the value of a device-to-cloud solution in accelerating innovation in transportation and fleet management, but the model works across many industries and applications. We enable an organization to focus on developing the portion of the solution that is unique and tailored to its customers, knowing that the wireless connectivity and communication functions are already integrated and tested.”

CBS Outdoor manages 3,500 advertising sites remotely with wireless technology

As an external communications subsidiary of CBS Group, a multinational corporation in the communications and media sector, CBS Outdoor is one of the European leaders in outdoor advertising, with a turnover of 170 million Euros and ownership of 60,000 billboards – of which 20% are motorized  – installed in 4,000 Cities.

“The idea was to report to the customer on the operation of the panels since it was not possible for the customer to check himself. The easiest solution consists of organizing inspection tours, but the cost and time required for such an approach is significant. Our alternative solution was to develop an automated remote monitoring system for the billboards,” said Marion Manyri, methods and innovation manager for CBS Outdoor.

Challenges

With the outdoor advertising industry going mobile, scrolling billboards present both opportunities and challenges, including the need for advanced maintenance and breakdown service. Customers adopting use of the scrolling billboards require frequent information on changing display content and visual uptime.

Solution

CBS Outdoor enlisted Sierra Wireless and its AirVantage™ Services Platform to fulfill the remote monitoring and management requirements. The AirVantage Services Platform helps users achieve end-to-end control over their entire M2M service delivery value chain, with a turn-key management box that includes embedded intelligence to monitor critical devices and functions and adapted middleware to perform data acquisition, breakdown detection, alert management and automatic fault notification. The solution uses reliable cellular communications for bidirectional data transfer and includes an easy-to-use, customizable web interface that displays billboard mapping, status and history. The AirVantage™ Services Platform is offered through a Software as a Service (SaaS) delivery method to reduce upfront capital expenditures and any on-going maintenance costs.

CBS Outdoor has fitted all of its 3500 scrolling billboards, located in France’s metro areas, with an AirVantage solution.

The remote monitoring and management solution using the AirVantage Services Platform provides the following benefits:

  • Improved customer service with real-time panel operating status that can be viewed with a simple click
  • Enhanced uptime from quick response enabled by detecting and viewing breakdowns over a simple web interface in real-time
  • Improved equipment reliability by identifying problems for individual panels to isolate and remove problem equipment
  • Enabled capability for CBS Outdoor to sell SLA to its customers and to prove and report precisely and accurately the broadcast of an advertising campaign
  • Optimized maintenance operations by eliminating time and cost of visual inspection tours
